Welcome House is the product of a unique joint venture between PRI and a for-profit developer, Gibralter Land, Inc., to develop a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) project. The concept grew out of a commitment by the City of Atlanta in 1991 to provide more housing for the homeless, after homeless advocates occupied the old Imperial Hotel in downtown Atlanta. In addition to a secure place to live, residents of Welcome House have available numerous forms of on-site social and medical assistance. The design of the building, with several single rooms sharing common bathrooms and kitchen areas, promotes individual privacy while reinforcing a community spirit. The facility offers common areas with a library, laundry facilities, recreation and other amenities, and it is also centrally located and accessible from public transportation, which makes working in the community more convenient for the residents. This attractive, award-winning community has been a "good neighbor" to this area of downtown Atlanta.
