Historic Scottish Rite Hospital Campus
Located in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur, this formerly vacant historic
hospital is now home to Progressive Redevelopment, PRISM Realty Management and CaringWorks,
as well as five other independent tenants.
In 1997, the City of Decatur (adjacent to the city of Atlanta) began
looking for a developer for the Scottish Rite property who would work to rehabilitate the historic
buildings, provide new single family housing for the neighborhood, help to enhance the Oakhurst business
district, return some part of the property to the tax roles, and provide a community center to South
Decatur. PRI and the Housing Resource Center (HRC) responded with a three-part plan for
the site: the rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of the graceful historic Scottish Rite Hospital
and its two wings, the construction of 14 new accessible apartment units for people from the Shepherd
Center who have a temporary or permanent disabilities, and the introduction of new single family
affordable homes. This winning approach met the goals of the City of Decatur and the Oakhurst
neighborhood. With the renovation now completed and the property fully leased, the historic buildings
are occupied by a mixture of non-profit and for-profit tenants such as the YWCA of Greater Atlanta,
the Community Center of South Decatur, a popular art gallery and an optometrist. It is also home to
PRI and its PRISM Realty Management and CaringWorks subsidiaries. This project has turned what was
a neighborhood eyesore into an award-winning community asset while helping to revitalize the
Oakhurst business district.
